The project began with an envelope of photographs from a family cupboard. I recognised some faces immediately. Others were familiar without a name, and several pictures had nothing written on the back. I realised that the photographs had survived, but part of their meaning had already begun to disappear.

I started slowly: one envelope, one conversation and one page of notes at a time. The more I organised, the clearer the real challenge became. Preserving a memory is not only about keeping an object safe. It is about keeping enough context for another person to understand it.
