Record the Voices Behind Your Family History
Record family memories through comfortable conversations that preserve voice, detail and context.
Move beyond dates and collect the stories behind them. Prepare a relaxed interview, ask questions that invite memory and turn a recording into a readable family story.
Family stories are often repeated for years and then disappear because nobody recorded the details. Yet beginning an interview can feel formal, intrusive or technically complicated.
Stories Worth Keeping shows you how to choose a manageable starting point, ask permission, prepare simple prompts and listen without rushing the speaker. Learn how to follow an unexpected detail, handle uncertainty and turn a recording or notes into a clear story.
You do not need professional equipment or interview experience. You need time, consent and questions that make room for memory.
Six things this guide teaches you.
- Choose one person and a useful interview theme.
- Prepare questions without scripting the conversation.
- Ask for informed permission before recording.
- Listen, follow detail and avoid unnecessary interruption.
- Transcribe selectively and preserve the speaker’s voice.
- Store and share the finished record respectfully.

Is this the right guide for you?
Beginners who want to record parents, grandparents, relatives or their own memories in a manageable format.
No previous archiving, interviewing or album-making experience is needed. Each guide begins with a modest setup and says when specialist supplies or professional advice may be appropriate.
I began because the names were disappearing.
Ruth Bellamy · Author
The project began with an envelope of photographs from a family cupboard. I recognised some faces immediately. Others were familiar without a name, and several pictures had nothing written on the back. I realised that the photographs had survived, but part of their meaning had already begun to disappear.
I started slowly: one envelope, one conversation and one page of notes at a time. The more I organised, the clearer the real challenge became. Preserving a memory is not only about keeping an object safe. It is about keeping enough context for another person to understand it.
Memoryharbor turns that idea into small, practical projects. You do not need to become a historian or create a perfect family archive. You only need a careful place to begin and a method you can return to.
